The element itself

Phosphorus was discovered by an alchemist boiling down urine in search of gold, and the white form he got glows faintly in air of its own accord — the original meaning of phosphorescence, though the effect is really slow burning. It is far too reactive to occur free in nature. The phosphate rock that feeds the world's fertiliser comes from ancient continental margins where cold, nutrient-rich water upwelled and life bloomed and died in quantity, laying down the remains on the seafloor; there is no synthetic substitute for it.

Phosphorus melts at 44°C (317.3 K) — lower than 80 of the 97 elements whose melting point has been measured, and higher than 16. The grey dots are the rest of the table.
In the Earth's crust there is about 0.1% of the crust by weight. That makes it commoner than 82 of the 93 elements that occur naturally at all. The scale is logarithmic: each gridline is ten times the one below it.

In living things

Phosphorus does no redox chemistry at all, and that is precisely why life uses it for its most important linkages. A phosphate ester keeps a negative charge, so a DNA backbone or a sugar phosphate cannot simply drift out through a membrane, and it is stubbornly stable in water until an enzyme decides otherwise — which makes phosphate both the glue of the genome and the currency of ATP. Most of the body's phosphorus — something like five sixths of it — is mineral instead, locked with calcium into the hydroxyapatite of bone and teeth. Having no gas phase to speak of, phosphorus moves only through rock, water and bodies, and it is usually what runs out first in a lake.

In Chinese history and language

Bone is calcium phosphate, and the earliest Chinese writing anyone can read is cut into it: 甲骨文 jiǎgǔwén, "shell and bone script", incised on ox shoulder blades and turtle plastrons that Shang diviners heated until they cracked. The pieces surfaced in Henan in the late nineteenth century, where they were being sold to pharmacies as 龙骨 lónggǔ, dragon bones, to be powdered as medicine, until the marks on them were recognised as characters. Every element name on this table descends from that script, and it survived three thousand years underground because apatite does not rot.

Where it comes from in China

Phosphorus comes from the Yangtze platform — Kunyang in Yunnan, Kaiyang and Weng'an in Guizhou, and the Yichang area of Hubei — where thick phosphorite beds built up on a shallow shelf fed by cold, nutrient-rich upwelling at the end of the Precambrian and the start of the Cambrian. Those same beds are famous for a second reason: the phosphorite at Weng'an preserves microscopic fossils from around six hundred million years ago, in cell-by-cell detail, which many palaeontologists read as among the earliest animal embryos. Phosphate does that — it replaces soft tissue quickly enough to keep detail that would otherwise rot away entirely.
