Location Words

方位名词 · fāngwèi míngcí

Say where things are using location words like 上/下/里/外/前/后

Pattern名词 + 方位词Place a location word right after a noun to describe a position relative to that noun.

书在桌子上。

Shū zài zhuōzi shàng.

The book is on the table.

手机在书包里。

Shǒujī zài shūbāo lǐ.

The phone is in the backpack.

猫在椅子下。

Māo zài yǐzi xià.

The cat is under the chair.

Modal Verbs: 会 & 能

能愿动词:会/能 · néngyuàn dòngcí: huì / néng

Talk about ability and possibility using 会 and 能

Pattern主语 + 会/能 + 动词Place 会 or 能 right before the main verb to say someone can or is able to do something.

我不会说中文。

Wǒ bú huì shuō Zhōngwén.

I can't speak Chinese.

她会做中国菜。

Tā huì zuò Zhōngguó cài.

She can cook Chinese food.

明天你能来吗?

Míngtiān nǐ néng lái ma?

Expressing Wants: 想 & 要

能愿动词:想/要 · néngyuàn dòngcí: xiǎng / yào

Express desires and intentions using 想 and 要

Pattern主语 + 想/要 + 动词Place 想 or 要 before the verb to express wanting or intending to do something.

我想学中文。

Wǒ xiǎng xué Zhōngwén.

I'd like to learn Chinese.

他要去书店。

Tā yào qù shūdiàn.

He's going to the bookstore.

你想吃什么?

Nǐ xiǎng chī shénme?

What would you like to eat?

Prefixes & Suffixes (词缀)

词缀(前缀 / 后缀) · cízhuì (qiánzhuì / hòuzhuì)

Recognise the HSK 1 bound morphemes: 小—, 第—, —们, —边

Pattern词缀 + 词根 or 词根 + 词缀Chinese has a small set of bound morphemes that can't stand alone but reshape any word they attach to. HSK 1 introduces two PREFIXES (小— for affection/young; 第— for ordinals) and two SUFFIXES (—们 for plurals of people; —边 for location nouns).

小王是我的朋友。

Xiǎo Wáng shì wǒ de péngyou.

"Young Wang" is my friend.

这是第一课。

Zhè shì dì-yī kè.

This is the first lesson.

我们都是学生。

Wǒmen dōu shì xuésheng.

We are all students.
