Modifier + + noun

的 is the connector that attaches ANY descriptive material — an adjective, a possessor, a verb phrase, even a whole clause — to the noun it modifies.

At HSK 1, ONLY 的 is officially introduced. 地 (manner adverbial particle) and 得 (complement particle) are HSK 2 / HSK 3 territory. Stay focused on 的 and you cover 100% of HSK 1 needs.

Understanding 结构助词:的

If you only learn one Chinese particle in your life, make it 的 (de). It is the universal "modifier glue" — anything that describes, owns, or specifies a noun gets attached to that noun with 的. 我的书 (my book), 红色的花 (red flower), 妈妈做的菜 (dishes mom made), 在桌子上的手机 (the phone on the table). Same particle, four very different jobs — all connecting a description to a noun. The 大纲 specifies just 的1 at HSK 1; its cousins 地 (for adverbs) and 得 (for complements) come later. Master 的 first and the rest of the "de family" will fall into place. Think of 的 as Chinese's answer to English "of," "'s," and the relative pronouns "that / which / who" rolled into one tiny syllable.

Key Points

  • 的 ties a modifier to a noun: 漂亮的花 (beautiful flowers).
  • 的 marks possession: 我的 (my), 你的 (your), 老师的书 (the teacher's book).
  • 的 can attach a whole clause to a noun: 妈妈做的菜 (dishes that Mom made).
  • 的 can also "stand in" for the noun: 红的 (the red one), 我的 (mine).
  • Two-character adjectives ALMOST ALWAYS take 的: 漂亮的衣服, 高兴的孩子.
  • Close family / institutional nouns often DROP 的: 我爸爸, 我们老师, 你家.
  • Single-character adjectives directly attached to a noun also skip 的: 好人 (good person), 大房间 (big room).
  • Avoid the HSK 2 traps: do NOT use 的 before a verb to mean "-ly" (that's 地), and don't use it after a verb to introduce a degree complement (that's 得).

The three "de" particles (的 / 地 / 得) are famously confusing even for native writers — Chinese social media is full of people mixing them up. The HSK 3.0 syllabus is generous: at HSK 1 you only need 的, so resist the temptation to overthink the other two.

1

你的衣服很好看。

Nǐ de yīfu hěn hǎokàn.

Your clothes look great.

Possession: 你 (you) + 的 + 衣服 (clothes).

2

这是妈妈做的菜。

Zhè shì māma zuò de cài.

This is the dish Mom made.

Clause modifier — a whole "Mom made" idea attaches to 菜.

3

漂亮的花开了。

Piàoliang de huā kāi le.

The beautiful flowers bloomed.

Two-character adjective + 的.

4

红色的裙子是她的。

Hóngsè de qúnzi shì tā de.

The red dress is hers.

Same 的 twice — once attaching color, once standing in for "hers."

5

我的手机在桌子上。

Wǒ de shǒujī zài zhuōzi shàng.

My phone is on the table.

6

新买的手机很好用。

Xīn mǎi de shǒujī hěn hǎoyòng.

The newly bought phone works great.

Verb phrase + 的 modifies the noun.

7

你有没有吃的?

Nǐ yǒu méiyǒu chī de?

Do you have anything to eat?

吃的 literally "something-eaten" — 的 turns a verb into a noun-phrase.

8

我爸爸是医生。

Wǒ bàba shì yīshēng.

My dad is a doctor.

Close family — 的 dropped naturally.

9

我们老师很认真。

Wǒmen lǎoshī hěn rènzhēn.

Our teacher is very serious.

Institutional possessive — 的 dropped.

10

红的好看,还是白的好看?

Hóng de hǎokàn, háishì bái de hǎokàn?

Is the red one prettier, or the white one?

的 as a noun substitute — "the red one" / "the white one."

Common Mistakes

漂亮花
漂亮的花piàoliang de huā

Two-character adjectives need 的 when modifying a noun. Only single-character adjectives like 好/大 can skip 的.

我的爸爸的书
我爸爸的书wǒ bàba de shū

Close family + possessor drops the first 的: 我爸爸. The second 的 (linking dad to his book) stays.

他高兴的笑了。
他高兴地笑了。 (HSK 2)Tā gāoxìng de xiào le.

When the descriptor modifies a VERB (how he laughed), the syllabus marker is 地, not 的. 地 is introduced at HSK 2 — for now, stick to 的 + noun structures.

Tips & Tricks

1

Mental shortcut: if you would say "'s" or "of" or "which/that/who" in English, reach for 的 in Chinese.

2

Two-character adjectives almost always need 的. Single-character ones (好/大/小) usually don't. Family relations drop it altogether.

3

的 is the only structural particle at HSK 1. Don't reach for 地 or 得 yet — they have their own HSK 2 / 3 lessons coming up.

4

When you can't finish a noun phrase mid-sentence, just leave the 的 hanging: 红的、新的、我的 — these all stand as complete noun substitutes.

Homework

Write eight sentences using 的: two for possession, two for adjective + noun (use two-character adjectives), two for a verb / verb-phrase + noun, and two where 的 stands alone as a noun substitute (e.g., 红的、新的、我的).
