HSK 2.0 vs HSK 3.0: what actually changed

xiōng yǒu chéng zhú — “To have the finished bamboo already in mind”

Nine levels instead of six, a three-way scale of characters, words and grammar, and a band above the old ceiling. What is different, and what it means for a certificate you already hold.

Not what you were looking for?

In 2021 the HSK was rebuilt. The familiar six levels became nine, the top of the scale moved a long way up, and the syllabus started specifying things it had never specified before. If you studied for the old exam, hold an old certificate, or are reading a requirement written before the change, this is what is different and what it means for you.

The short version

  • Six levels became nine — HSK 3.0 keeps levels 1 to 6 and adds a 7-9 band above them, grouped into three stages: elementary (1-3), intermediate (4-6) and advanced (7-9).
  • The syllabus specifies more than words — HSK 2.0 was, in practice, a vocabulary list per level. HSK 3.0 specifies syllables, characters, words and grammar points separately — four axes, each with its own count per level.
  • Every level got bigger — The same label covers more material. An HSK 4 under the new standard is not the HSK 4 somebody prepared for in 2018.
  • Speaking moved inside the exam, at the top — HSK 1-6 still has a separate spoken test (HSKK) taken independently. The new HSK 7-9 paper includes speaking — and translation — as sections of the paper itself.

The two columns count different things, deliberately. HSK 2.0 published a cumulative list per level; the HSK 3.0 column is the NEW vocabulary introduced in each band, as listed on our own syllabus pages. The standard itself describes a span of 500 to 11,000+ words across the nine levels.

Read the first two rows together and the change is obvious: HSK 1 went from 150 words to 500, and HSK 2 from a cumulative 300 to a cumulative 1,272. The lower levels are where the standard moved most. At the top the shift is structural rather than incremental — HSK 2.0 simply stopped at 5,000 words, and HSK 3.0 keeps going for another band.

I hold an HSK 2.0 certificate. Is it still valid?

Yes, in the sense that it is a real certificate that records a real result, and institutions have continued to accept old certificates. Two practical caveats matter more than the question of validity.

First, score reports are generally treated as current for two years by bodies that ask for one. A certificate from before the standard changed is now outside that window for most purposes, which is a recency problem rather than a standards problem.

Second, the levels are not equivalent. An HSK 5 under the old standard covered a cumulative 2,500 words; the new HSK 5 band introduces 1,595 on top of roughly 3,200 already. If somebody is comparing you against a candidate with a new certificate at the same number, the number is doing less work than it looks like.

Which standard am I being tested against?

HSK 3.0. The transition is done for new candidates: what you register for and sit today is built on the 2021 standard, and the per-level figures and paper formats in these guides are the current ones.

Where you will still meet HSK 2.0 is in materials. A textbook, a word list or a practice app written before 2021 is teaching the old syllabus, and at the lower levels that is a gap of hundreds of words. If a resource does not say which standard it follows, check its HSK 1 vocabulary count: 150 means it is old, 500 means it is current.

What to actually do about it

  1. Check the date on your study materials — Anything that predates 2021 is teaching a smaller syllabus than the one you will sit. It is not useless — the words in it are still words — but it is not complete.
  2. Re-check the requirement you are aiming at — If a requirement was written against HSK 2.0, the level named may not mean what its author intended. Ask.
  3. Plan for the lower levels being larger — The biggest proportional increases are at HSK 1 to 3. A learner working from an old plan will reach the exam under-prepared in exactly the place they expected to be comfortable.
  4. Use the band pages as the current list — Our HSK 1-9 courses and dictionary bands are built on HSK 3.0, so the vocabulary you meet is the vocabulary that is examinable.

Common questions

The standard — 国际中文教育中文水平等级标准 — was issued in 2021 and took effect that July. Rollout of the examinations themselves was phased, with HSK 7-9 appearing first and the lower levels transitioning afterwards.
