Not what you were looking for?

HSK 1 is the smallest real exam in the series: two sections, no writing, and a vocabulary you could meet in a month of serious study. It is also the one most people skip — and skipping it is usually a mistake, because the thing a beginner lacks is not ability but a deadline. This is what the paper asks, what sits behind it, and how to be ready.

Five hundred words, fifty-four grammar points. That is the entire syllabus, and it is genuinely finishable — which is the argument for sitting HSK 1 rather than waiting until you feel ready for HSK 3. A finished thing is worth more to a beginner than an unfinished bigger thing.

The listening audio is played once, for the whole room. You cannot pause it, replay it, or go back to a question after its recording has finished — which is why practice under the clock matters more at HSK 1 than any amount of extra vocabulary.

Two things are worth noticing. There is no writing section — HSK 1 and HSK 2 are the only levels without one, so you are never asked to produce a character from memory. And the questions are built around pictures: you hear or read something and choose the image it matches, or judge whether a given image fits. That keeps the reading load low and puts almost all the difficulty in the listening.

What is actually hard at this level

  • Tones, under time pressure — You will know the words. The question is whether you can tell 买 from 卖 in a sentence played once, at a speed nobody chose for your benefit. This is the single biggest cause of lost marks at HSK 1.
  • Audio that does not wait — The listening recording plays once for the whole room. There is no pause, no replay, and no going back to a question after its recording has finished. Practising with a replay button available does not prepare you for that.
  • Knowing the word in the wrong direction — Recognising 医院 on a page is not the same as hearing it and picturing a hospital inside a second. Recognition is cheap and comes first; retrieval is what the exam measures.
  • Numbers, dates and times — They are the most testable thing in the syllabus and the most slippery under pressure — 四 and 十, 星期四 and 四点. Drill them separately from everything else.

How to prepare for it

  1. Work the band, not a word list — Open the HSK 1 course and follow it in order. The 500 words arrive attached to the sentences they live in, which is what makes them retrievable rather than merely familiar.
  2. Review before you add — Spaced repetition protects what you already paid for. A free account reviews 20 cards a day, which is enough to hold a 500-word syllabus if you do it daily and not enough if you do it weekly.
  3. Listen with your eyes shut — Use the listening studio and attempt every item before you look at the transcript. The transcript is the answer key; reading along is revision, not practice.
  4. Say three sentences a day, out loud — Production is what turns a recognised word into an available one. Three sentences is a small enough target to actually do on a bad day, which is the point of setting it there.
  5. Sit a timed paper before you book — One full mock paper per level is free. Sit it under the clock with no pausing. The score matters far less than discovering which section runs out of time.

Is HSK 1 worth sitting at all?

Almost nobody will ever ask to see an HSK 1 certificate. Universities do not want it, employers do not ask for it, and no visa depends on it. If you are judging it as a credential, it is close to worthless.

Judge it as a commitment device instead. It is a dated, paid, external event that makes finishing the first 500 words non-optional, and the first 500 words are where almost everyone quits. Sitting it costs you an afternoon and buys you a reason not to restart from zero for the fourth time.

Registering and sitting it

Which HSK should you sit?

Pick the level you are considering. You will get what the paper asks of you, what the syllabus behind it contains, and what the certificate is typically used for — before you pay a registration fee.

Not sure where you stand? The grammar placement check puts you on a band in a few minutes, and every level above has one free mock paper you can sit without an account.

Registration is handled by CTI at chinesetest.cn, not by us, and so are fees, dates and the list of test centres. You will need to register several weeks ahead of a sitting, and you choose between a paper test and an internet-based one at the point of booking.

Common questions

HSK 1 and HSK 2 are reported out of 200, and 120 is the conventional pass mark — 60%. Because there is no writing section, every mark comes from the two multiple-choice sections, so the arithmetic is simple: you can afford to lose about 16 of the 40 questions.
