HSK exam guides

A guide to taking the HSK 5 (HSK 3.0)

xiōng yǒu chéng zhú — “To have the finished bamboo already in mind”

HSK 5 in detail: 100 questions in 115 minutes, 40 of them writing, and the shift from understanding sentences to understanding what a text is doing.

7 min read

Not what you were looking for?

HSK 5 is where comprehension stops being about words. You will meet sentences in which every character is familiar and the meaning still escapes, because what is being tested has moved from what a text says to what it is doing — implication, attitude, register. The writing section grows to 40 minutes to match.

The listening audio is played once, for the whole room. You cannot pause it, replay it, or go back to a question after its recording has finished — which is why practice under the clock matters more at HSK 5 than any amount of extra vocabulary.

Notice the writing section: 40 minutes for 10 items, where HSK 4 gave 25 minutes for 15. The tasks have got fewer and much longer. This is the level at which writing stops being a grammar check and becomes composition.

What is actually hard at this level

  • Near-synonym cloze — A gap, four words that all translate the same way into English, and exactly one that collocates. English-based intuition is actively misleading here; the only reliable preparation is having met the collocation before.
  • Reading for implication — Questions asking what the writer thinks, or what is implied but not stated. A candidate who has trained on fact-retrieval questions can score well on every lower level and stall here.
  • Chengyu and set phrases — They arrive in volume at HSK 5, they are opaque from their characters, and they carry the attitude of a sentence. A passage can turn on one you do not know.
  • Writing something a person would write — The composition tasks are judged as writing, not as a grammar exercise. Correct sentences in a formless order do not score what a shaped paragraph scores.
  • Forty-five minutes of reading — The longest reading section so far, and the passages are long enough that re-reading is not affordable. One pass, questions first.

How to prepare for it

  1. Read extensively, outside the syllabus — Graded material cannot get you to HSK 5 alone, because the thing being tested is contact with real prose. Pick a subject you would read about in your own language and read about it in Chinese.
  2. Collect collocations, not words — Save 产生影响, not 产生. A word on its own is a gloss; a word with its partners is usable, and the cloze items test exactly the difference.
  3. Work the course in order — The HSK 5 course is 107 lessons across 17 units — more lessons than HSK 4 in fewer units, because the units are deeper rather than broader.
  4. Write one piece a week and revise it — Not more frequent, shorter pieces — one real piece, then a second pass for precision and register. Revision is the part that teaches, and it is the part everybody skips.
  5. Summarise what you read, in Chinese — Read a passage, close it, write four sentences about it. It trains reading comprehension and composition at once, and it is the closest thing to what HSK 6 will ask of you next.

What HSK 5 is good for

HSK 5 is the level at which Chinese becomes a working language rather than a listed skill. The standard describes it as reading Chinese newspapers and magazines, following films and broadcasts, and giving a sustained spoken presentation — and that is roughly the threshold at which an employer can give you work in Chinese rather than work about China.

It is frequently asked for by competitive degree programmes and by scholarship schemes. As ever: the specific threshold is set by the specific body, it is sometimes a score rather than a level, and it changes. Confirm it rather than inferring it.

Registering and sitting it

Which HSK should you sit?

Pick the level you are considering. You will get what the paper asks of you, what the syllabus behind it contains, and what the certificate is typically used for — before you pay a registration fee.

Not sure where you stand? The grammar placement check puts you on a band in a few minutes, and every level above has one free mock paper you can sit without an account.

Common questions

HSK 5 is reported out of 300 with 180 the conventional pass. At this level the score matters more than the pass: institutions that require HSK 5 commonly specify a number, and 210 is a frequent one.
