+ initial situation/attitude + changed situation / + realization

起初 means "at first / in the beginning." It sets up an initial state that later changed. The second clause uses 后来 (later) to show how things evolved, or 才 (only then) to emphasize that the realization or change came belatedly.

起初 is more literary and formal than 刚开始 or 一开始. Using 才 in the second clause adds the nuance that the change took longer than expected or that the speaker was slow to realize something. The pattern inherently implies contrast between the initial and later states.

Listen to Jason & Amy explain the 起初……,后来/……才…… pattern

Understanding 起初……,后来/……才……

The 起初……后来/才…… pattern is a sophisticated narrative tool for describing how situations, opinions, or attitudes evolved over time. The word 起初 sets the scene by describing the initial state of affairs — what someone thought, felt, or did at the beginning. The second clause then reveals the change: 后来 simply indicates "later," while 才 adds the nuance of "only then" or "not until later," suggesting the change was delayed or the realization was hard-won. This pattern is invaluable for storytelling, personal reflections, and arguments where you want to show how experience changed your perspective. It appears frequently in essays, narratives, and persuasive writing.

Key Points

  • 起初 means "at first / initially" and is more formal than 刚开始 or 一开始.
  • The first clause with 起初 describes the original situation, opinion, or attitude.
  • The second clause with 后来 describes how things changed over time.
  • Using 才 instead of or with 后来 emphasizes that the change was delayed or the realization came late.
  • The pattern always implies a contrast between the initial and later states.
  • Commonly used in narratives, reflections, persuasive essays, and biographical accounts.

This pattern aligns with a common Chinese rhetorical strategy called 先抑后扬 (first suppress, then elevate) — starting with a negative or incomplete understanding and then revealing how it improved. It is a beloved technique in Chinese essays and speeches.

Common Mistakes

起初他来了,后来她也来了。
先是他来了,后来她也来了。Xiān shì tā lái le, hòulái tā yě lái le.

起初 implies a contrast in state or attitude, not just a simple sequence of events. For listing sequential arrivals without contrast, use 先 or 首先 instead.

Tips & Tricks

1

Always ensure there is a genuine contrast between the 起初 clause and the 后来/才 clause — the whole point of the pattern is showing change.

2

Adding 才 to the second clause makes the change feel more dramatic or delayed: "only later" versus simply "later."

3

In essays, 起初 is excellent for opening paragraphs that describe personal growth or changing perspectives.

4

Pair 起初 with emotion or attitude verbs (不理解, 不喜欢, 不相信) for maximum narrative impact.

Homework

Write a personal essay paragraph describing something you initially disliked or misunderstood but later came to appreciate. Use 起初……后来才…… at least twice, and include specific details about what caused the change in your perspective.
