It is one of the most practical discourse markers in Chinese, allowing you to smoothly transition from evidence to conclusion. When you say 看来明天不会再下雨了, you are looking at the sky or the weather report and drawing a conclusion. Unlike stating a fact directly, 看来 signals that this is your interpretation — you could be wrong, and you acknowledge that. This makes it polite and hedging, perfect for situations where you want to express an opinion without being too forceful. You can also make it more personal with 在我看来 (in my view) or strengthen it with 这样看来 (given this, it seems...). Learning to use 看来 well makes your Chinese more analytical and nuanced.

Common Mistakes
看来 is a fixed phrase — do not add 了 after it. The 了 belongs at the end of the conclusion clause if needed.
To express a personal opinion, use the full form 在我看来, not just 我看来.
看来 implies uncertainty and inference. Using 一定 (definitely) contradicts the hedging nature of 看来. If you are certain, drop 看来.
