Degree Adverbs: 格外, 极, 极其
程度副词:格外、极、极其
Express extreme degrees using 格外 (especially), 极 (extremely), and 极其 (exceedingly)
格外 and 极其 are placed before adjectives as intensifiers. 极 is most commonly used in the pattern "adjective + 极了" after the adjective. All three express that something has reached an extreme degree.
格外 suggests "more than usual" or "particularly." 极其 is the most formal and emphatic of the three. 极了 is colloquial and expressive — it is the one you will hear most in conversation.

Understanding 程度副词:格外、极、极其
At HSK 4, you move beyond basic intensifiers like 很 and 非常 to more expressive degree adverbs. 格外 (géwài) means "especially" or "particularly" — it implies something is more intense than usual, often because of special circumstances. 极 (jí) means "extremely" and is most commonly used in the pattern 形容词 + 极了, like 好极了 (extremely good) or 累极了 (extremely tired). 极其 (jíqí) is the most formal and literary of the three, meaning "exceedingly" — you will encounter it more in written Chinese and formal speech. Together, these three words give you a richer palette for expressing intensity. Think of them as a spectrum: 格外 (particularly, more than normal) → 极了 (extremely, colloquial) → 极其 (exceedingly, formal).
Key Points
- 格外 (géwài) = "especially / particularly" — implies more than usual due to special circumstances.
- 极 (jí) = "extremely" — most common in the pattern 形容词 + 极了.
- 极其 (jíqí) = "exceedingly / extremely" — formal, used before adjectives.
- 格外 goes BEFORE the adjective: 格外开心.
- 极了 goes AFTER the adjective: 高兴极了, 漂亮极了.
- 极其 goes BEFORE the adjective: 极其重要, 极其负责.
- 极了 is common in spoken Chinese; 极其 is common in written Chinese and formal speech.
Chinese speakers often use degree adverbs to express emotions vividly. Saying 高兴极了 rather than just 很高兴 shows genuine excitement. In Chinese culture, expressing enthusiasm and strong positive feelings is valued in social interactions — using these intensifiers appropriately shows emotional engagement.

Common Mistakes
极了 always comes AFTER the adjective, not before. The pattern is: 形容词 + 极了.
极其 must be placed directly before the adjective it modifies, within the sentence structure.
Do not combine 格外 with 很 — they are both degree adverbs. Use one or the other.

Tips & Tricks
Quick rule: 格外 and 极其 go BEFORE adjectives. 极了 goes AFTER adjectives.
格外 has a sense of "more than expected" — use it when something stands out from the norm.
极了 is your go-to for casual conversation: 好极了! 棒极了! 美极了!
When writing formal essays or reports, reach for 极其 instead of 极了.
