把-Sentences 1: Expressing Disposal and Placement
"把"字句1:表处置
Use 把 to express what is done to a specific object — moving, giving, or changing it
The 把 construction brings the object before the verb to emphasize what happens to it. The verb must be followed by additional information — a location (在/到), an indirect object (给), a result complement, a directional complement, or a descriptive complement.
The verb in a 把 sentence can never stand alone — it must have some additional element after it. You cannot say *我把书看 — you must say 我把书看完了. The object after 把 must be specific and known (definite).

Understanding "把"字句1:表处置
The 把 sentence is one of the most important and distinctive structures in Chinese. It signals that the subject does something to the object that changes it in some way — moves it, gives it away, finishes it, breaks it, or transforms it. Think of 把 as a spotlight on the object: "Take this thing and do something to it." The key rule is that the verb cannot stand alone after 把 — there must always be a result, direction, location, or other complement. This is because 把 inherently implies a change or completion. There are three main sub-patterns: (1) 把 + object + verb + 在/到 + place (placing or moving something), (2) 把 + object + verb + (给) + person (transferring something), and (3) 把 + object + verb + complement (changing the state of something). Mastering 把 sentences is a milestone in Chinese learning — they appear everywhere in daily speech.
Key Points
- Pattern 1: 主语 + 把 + 宾语 + 动词 + 在/到 + 处所 — 老师把书放在桌子上了.
- Pattern 2: 主语 + 把 + 宾语1 + 动词 (+给) + 宾语2 — 他们把作业交给老师了.
- Pattern 3: 主语 + 把 + 宾语 + 动词 + 结果/趋向/状态补语 — 他把衣服拿回来了.
- The object after 把 must be definite (specific, known) — not "a book" but "the book" or "that book."
- The verb can never stand alone — *我把门关 is wrong; 我把门关上了 is correct.
- Negation goes before 把: 我没把书放在桌子上.
- 把 sentences emphasize the disposal or handling of the object, not just the action itself.
- 把 is used when the action results in a change of state, location, or ownership.
The 把 construction reflects a Chinese way of thinking about actions as having concrete results on objects. In daily life, you will hear 把 constantly: 把门关上 (close the door), 把作业交了 (hand in your homework), 把房间收拾干净 (tidy up the room). Parents and teachers use it especially often when giving instructions.

The object after 把 must be definite (specific). Use 那本书 (that book) or 这本书 (this book), not 一本书 (a book).
Negation (没/不) goes before 把, not after it.
Practice Exercises
Tips & Tricks
Remember: 把 = "take this thing and do something to it." Always ask yourself: what happened to the object?
The verb must have a "result" — a complement, 了, 在/到 + place, or 给 + person.
Only use 把 with definite, specific objects — things both speaker and listener know about.
Practice with household commands: 把灯关了, 把门打开, 把衣服洗干净, 把饭吃完.
Homework
Write twelve 把 sentences: four using the 在/到 + location pattern, four using the 给 + person pattern, and four using result or state complements. Try to use different verbs in each sentence.
