/ / condition clause + result clause

Hypothetical sentences present a condition and its expected result. Without connectors, the condition clause comes first, followed by the result. With connectors, 如果……就…… is the standard pattern, and ……的话 can be appended to the condition for a casual "if… then…" feel.

如果 introduces the condition ("if"), 就 introduces the result ("then"). 的话 is a casual marker meaning "if that is the case." You can combine them: 如果……的话,就……

Understanding 假设复句

Hypothetical sentences are your "what if" tool. The simplest form needs no connectors at all: 明天下雨,我们在家休息 (If it rains tomorrow, we will rest at home). The condition-before-result order makes the "if" relationship clear. For explicit "if… then…" use 如果……就……: 如果你下午有时间,我们就一起去超市吧 (If you have time this afternoon, let us go to the supermarket together). The casual ……的话 is super useful — it turns any statement into a condition: 明天天气不好的话,我就不去公园了 (If the weather is bad tomorrow, I will not go to the park). Think of 的话 as tagging "if that is the case" onto a clause. You can even use all three together: 如果明天不下雨的话,我们就去爬山 — though this is slightly redundant, it is perfectly natural in spoken Chinese.

Key Points

  • Without connectors: condition clause first, result clause second.
  • 如果 (rúguǒ) = "if" — introduces the hypothetical condition.
  • 就 (jiù) = "then" — introduces the result or consequence.
  • 的话 (de huà) = "if (that is the case)" — casual condition marker, goes at end of condition clause.
  • 如果 can be replaced by 要是 in casual speech — same meaning.
  • The condition ALWAYS comes before the result in Chinese.
  • 就 is optional but makes the cause-result relationship more explicit.
  • 如果 and 的话 can be used together: 如果……的话,就……

Chinese speakers frequently use hypothetical patterns for polite suggestions — 如果你有时间的话 (If you have time) is a gentle way to propose plans without putting pressure on the other person. It shows consideration for their schedule and feelings.

Common Mistakes

我们就一起去,如果你有时间。
如果你有时间,我们就一起去。Rúguǒ nǐ yǒu shíjiān, wǒmen jiù yìqǐ qù.

In Chinese, the condition (如果) MUST come before the result (就). You cannot put the result first.

如果明天下雨,我们如果在家休息。
如果明天下雨,我们就在家休息。Rúguǒ míngtiān xiàyǔ, wǒmen jiù zài jiā xiūxi.

如果 only appears in the condition clause. The result clause uses 就, not another 如果.

Tips & Tricks

1

In daily conversation, 的话 is extremely common — it makes any clause a condition without needing 如果.

2

要是 is the casual replacement for 如果 — use it with friends.

3

Practice by making plans with conditions: 如果下雨就……如果不下雨就……

4

Remember: Chinese always puts the condition before the result — never reverse the order.
