Where the name comes from
Peng begins with Jian Keng (籛鏗), a descendant of Zhuanxu, who was granted the fief of Dapeng — "Great Peng", in what is now Xuzhou in Jiangsu — during the Shang. He is remembered as Peng Zu, the Chinese god of longevity; he founded the Da Peng state and his descendants took its name. Non-Han lines carry the surname too, including the Manchu Donggo (董鄂) clan and the Tujia, who trace theirs to Peng Shichou, prefect of Xizhou in the Five Dynasties period.
