V(+Object) + + V(+Object), // + /

The verb (optionally with its object) is repeated with 就 in between, followed by a dismissive phrase like 别在意 (don't mind it). This pattern acknowledges that something has happened and encourages the listener not to worry about it.

This is a highly colloquial, reassuring pattern. The repeated verb with 就 carries the meaning of "so what if it happened" or "it's done, it's done." The follow-up phrase (别在意, 别向后看, 别那么在意, etc.) provides the reassurance. Common verbs include 走, 说, 丢, 错, and 输.

Understanding 动词(+宾语)+就+动词(+宾语),别/勿在意

Life is full of small setbacks — a careless word, a lost item, a missed opportunity. Chinese speakers have a beautifully concise way of offering comfort in these moments: simply repeat the action verb with 就 and add a reassuring dismissal. When someone is upset about having said something wrong, a friend might say 说就说了,别那么在意 (you said it, so you said it — don't think too much about it). The repeated verb acknowledges the reality without minimizing it, while the dismissive follow-up gently encourages moving on. This pattern communicates emotional maturity and practical wisdom — what is done is done, so focus on what comes next. It is essential vocabulary for offering comfort, encouragement, and perspective in Chinese.

Key Points

  • V+就+V acknowledges that something happened and implies "so what" or "it is what it is."
  • The follow-up phrase (别在意, 别那么在意, 别放在心上) provides reassurance.
  • Highly colloquial — used among friends, family, and in casual settings.
  • The verb can appear with or without its object: 走就走 or 说几句就说几句.
  • The tone is always comforting and forward-looking — it encourages letting go of worry.
  • Sometimes the pattern is self-directed: 错就错了吧 (I made a mistake — so be it).

This pattern embodies a pragmatic philosophy common in Chinese culture: 过去的事就让它过去吧 (let bygones be bygones). Rather than dwelling on mistakes or setbacks, there is a cultural emphasis on accepting what happened and moving forward productively.

Tips & Tricks

1

This pattern is about emotional comfort — use it when someone is upset about something that cannot be changed.

2

3

Pair it with practical advice for maximum effect: 丢就丢了,再买一个吧 (it's lost, just buy another).

4

The attitude behind this pattern is maturity and acceptance — practice conveying warmth and reassurance in your tone.

Homework

Imagine a friend is upset about five different small setbacks (losing a phone, saying something awkward, being late, burning dinner, missing a bus). Write a comforting response for each using the V就V pattern with appropriate follow-up advice.
