Subject + + path/direction/surface + verb phrase

Place 顺着 before the noun representing a path, direction, or surface to indicate that the action follows along it. The verb phrase that follows describes the movement or action.

顺着 can indicate both physical movement along a path (顺着这条路走) and metaphorical following of a direction or logic (顺着他的思路). The object of 顺着 is always the thing being followed.

Listen to Jason & Amy explain the 介词:顺着 pattern

Understanding 介词:顺着

顺着 is a preposition meaning "along," "following," or "in the direction of." It is used when someone or something moves along a path, follows a surface, or proceeds in a particular direction. Physically, 顺着 describes motion that follows an existing route or surface — water flowing along hair, walking along a road, looking along a line. Metaphorically, it can mean following someone's line of reasoning or going with the flow of a situation. The character 顺 itself means "smooth" or "to follow," and adding 着 creates a preposition that specifically marks the path or direction being followed. 顺着 always takes a noun phrase as its object (a road, a river, a wall, a direction), and the main verb comes after to describe what action is performed along that path. It differs from 沿着, which is more formal and typically used for longer routes, while 顺着 is natural for both short and long paths.

Key Points

  • 顺着 (shùnzhe) = "along / following" — marks the path or direction of movement.
  • Structure: 顺着 + path noun + verb — always needs both a path and an action.
  • Physical meaning: walking along a road, flowing along a surface, looking along a line.
  • Metaphorical meaning: following a line of thought, going along with someone's idea.
  • Similar to 沿着 but more colloquial and used for both literal and figurative paths.
  • The object of 顺着 must be something that can be "followed" — a road, river, wall, direction, idea, etc.

The concept of 顺 (following the natural flow) is deeply embedded in Chinese culture, from the Daoist principle of 顺其自然 (let nature take its course) to the everyday idiom 顺风顺水 (smooth sailing). Using 顺着 in conversation reflects this cultural comfort with following natural paths.

Tips & Tricks

1

Visualize 顺着 as an arrow following a line — there must always be a "line" (path, surface, direction) to follow.

2

For giving directions, 顺着 is extremely useful: 顺着这条路一直走 (Go straight along this road).

3

In literary writing, 顺着 beautifully describes liquid movement: tears, rain, sweat following curves of the body.

4

Remember: 顺着 needs a noun after it. If you find yourself putting a verb directly after 顺着, something is wrong.

Homework

Write three sentences describing physical movement along a path (road, river, wall) and three sentences using 顺着 metaphorically (following a gaze, a line of thought, or a topic).
