Subject + + Duration/Number + Verb Phrase

一连 means "in succession / continuously / for X straight [days/times]." It emphasizes that something happens without interruption for a notable duration or number of times. A specific quantity or time period almost always follows 一连.

一连 requires a quantified measure — it almost always appears with a number + measure word + noun (一连三天, 一连五次, 一连几个小时). The emphasis is on the unbroken continuity and the impressiveness of the duration. It is common in both spoken and written Chinese, especially in narrative and descriptive contexts.

Listen to Jason & Amy explain the 方式副词:一连 pattern

Understanding 方式副词:一连

The adverb 一连 brings drama and emphasis to descriptions of continuous action. When you say 一连下了十天雨 (it rained for ten days straight), the word 一连 does not just convey the fact — it conveys the speaker's sense of how remarkable, exhausting, or impressive that continuity is. This makes 一连 an excellent narrative tool: it builds tension, conveys endurance, and highlights the unusual nature of sustained events. You will find 一连 in stories about perseverance (一连工作了三天三夜), extreme weather (一连下了两周的雨), repeated attempts (一连问了五个人), and any situation where the continuous nature of the action is the point. Unlike 连续 (which is more neutral and formal), 一连 carries a more colloquial, story-telling energy that draws the listener into the narrative.

Key Points

  • 一连 means "in succession / for X straight [days/times]" — emphasizing continuous, unbroken action.
  • Almost always followed by a number + measure word: 一连三天, 一连五次, 一连几个月.
  • Emphasizes that the duration or repetition is notable or impressive.
  • Common in narrative and descriptive contexts — great for storytelling.
  • More colloquial and vivid than 连续, which is more formal and neutral.
  • Can describe positive, negative, or neutral sustained events.

In Chinese storytelling, emphasizing endurance and persistence is a powerful narrative technique. Phrases like 一连三天三夜 (for three days and three nights straight) evoke a sense of heroic effort or remarkable circumstances. This pattern appears in folk tales, historical narratives, and modern fiction alike.

Tips & Tricks

1

Always include a number after 一连: 一连三天, 一连五次, 一连几个月. Without a number, the sentence feels incomplete.

2

Use 一连 for storytelling impact — it builds a sense of endurance, frustration, or impressiveness.

3

Compare: 一连 (colloquial, vivid), 连续 (formal, neutral), 接连 (one after another, often for events). Choose based on register and emphasis.

4

Try combining 一连 with 终于 (finally) for a satisfying narrative arc: 一连...终于...

Homework

Write four narrative paragraphs using 一连: (1) a student studying for exams, (2) extreme weather affecting a town, (3) an athlete's winning streak, (4) someone trying repeatedly to reach a friend by phone. Each paragraph should end with a resolution (终于, 结果, etc.).
