进而 is not a simple chronological connector. Going to work after eating breakfast is a sequence, not a progression. Use 然后 for simple time sequences. Reserve 进而 for when the second step builds upon and advances beyond the first.
进而 requires a logical progression where the second point is a further development of the first. Being smart and being handsome are unrelated qualities, not a progression.
