尽 (jǐn, third tone) functions as a degree adverb meaning "to the very end / at the furthest point / fully." It is commonly placed before directional or positional words to indicate the extreme position: 尽前头 (at the very front), 尽北边 (at the very north), 尽头 (the very end).

Note the tone: as a degree adverb meaning "utmost," 尽 is pronounced jǐn (third tone), distinguishing it from jìn (fourth tone) meaning "to exhaust / to use up." This usage of 尽 is somewhat colloquial in northern Chinese dialects but is widely understood.

Understanding 程度副词:尽

The character 尽 is remarkably versatile in Chinese, but here we focus on its use as a degree adverb pronounced jǐn (third tone). In this role, 尽 means "to the very end" or "at the extreme point" and is most commonly paired with directional words. When someone says 坐在尽前头, they mean sitting at the very front — not just near the front, but as far forward as possible. Similarly, 尽北边 means at the northernmost point. This usage is especially common in northern Chinese dialects and has spread into standard Mandarin. Beyond spatial meanings, 尽 can also convey doing something to the fullest extent. Understanding this adverb gives you a vivid, natural way to express extremes of position and degree that 最 alone cannot always capture.

Key Points

  • 尽 (jǐn) as a degree adverb = "to the very end / at the extreme point / fully."
  • Commonly used with directional words: 尽前头 (very front), 尽后头 (very back), 尽北边 (northernmost), 尽南边 (southernmost).
  • 尽头 (jìntóu) = "the very end (of a road, path, etc.)" — a common noun form.
  • Pronunciation note: jǐn (3rd tone) for "utmost"; jìn (4th tone) for "to exhaust."
  • This usage is particularly common in northern Chinese dialects but widely understood across regions.
  • Distinct from 最 (zuì): 尽 emphasizes reaching the extreme physical limit, while 最 is a general superlative.

Northern Chinese dialects (especially Beijing dialect) use 尽 extensively in daily speech to indicate spatial extremes. Phrases like 尽里头 (at the very inside) and 尽前头 (at the very front) are characteristic of authentic northern Mandarin and add a colloquial warmth to your speech.

Tips & Tricks

1

Think of 尽 + direction as "the very [direction]" — it pushes the location to its absolute limit.

The noun 尽头 (the end of a road/path) is extremely common and worth memorizing as a unit.

3

This 尽 (jǐn, 3rd tone) is different from 尽力 (jìnlì, 4th tone, "try one's best") — context and tone distinguish them.

4

If you visit Beijing, listen for 尽前头, 尽里头, 尽东头 — these are authentic northern expressions that locals use daily.

Homework

Describe the layout of your home, school, or office using 尽 + directional words at least four times. For example: 尽北边是厨房,走廊的尽头是卫生间. Draw a simple map and label positions using these phrases.
