AABB

Repeat a quality word (A) with 的 in the pattern "A的A, B的B" where A and B are contrasting qualities. This describes a situation where things are unevenly distributed or varied — some are A, others are B, with no uniformity. Often implies disorder, variety, or lack of coordination.

A and B are typically monosyllabic adjectives that form a contrasting pair: 大/小, 高/低, 老/少, 胖/瘦. The pattern emphasizes the gap or mismatch between the two extremes. It frequently carries a negative or neutral tone — highlighting lack of uniformity.

Understanding A的A,B的B

The pattern A的A,B的B is a vivid way to describe situations where things are all over the place — nothing is consistent, everything varies. When you say 衣服大的大,小的小, you are painting a picture of clothes that are either too big or too small, with nothing in between. The repetition of each adjective with 的 creates a sense of "the big ones are (really) big, the small ones are (really) small" — emphasizing the gap between extremes. This pattern is particularly useful for describing disorganized collections, uneven quality, or diverse groups where uniformity is lacking. It is often followed by a conclusion that highlights the problem: 没有一件合适的 (none of them fit), 不太整齐 (not very neat), or 怎么安排?(how do we arrange things?). The emotional tone is usually one of mild frustration, resignation, or neutral observation about the messy reality of things.

Key Points

  • A的A,B的B describes unevenness: "the A ones are A, the B ones are B" — no middle ground.
  • A and B are contrasting monosyllabic adjectives: 大/小, 高/低, 老/少, 好/坏.
  • Emphasizes the gap between extremes and the lack of uniformity.
  • Often followed by a conclusion expressing the resulting problem.
  • Usually carries a negative or neutral tone — describing disorder or mismatch.
  • The 的 between each pair is essential — it creates the "those that are X" meaning.

Chinese has a rich tradition of parallel structures (对仗) and contrasting pairs. The A的A,B的B pattern taps into this aesthetic while adding a practical, descriptive function. It is the kind of expression you might hear a market vendor use to describe their merchandise, or a parent use to describe the chaos of a family gathering.

Common Mistakes

衣服大大的,小小的。
衣服大的大,小的小。Yīfu dà de dà, xiǎo de xiǎo.

The pattern is A的A, not AA的. Each quality word is repeated with 的 in between: 大的大, not 大大的. The reduplication AA的 is a different pattern meaning "rather A."

菜好吃的好吃,难吃的难吃。
菜好的好,坏的坏。Cài hǎo de hǎo, huài de huài.

The pattern works best with monosyllabic contrasting pairs. Using two-syllable words like 好吃/难吃 is unnatural. Simplify to 好/坏 or restructure the sentence.

他们的A的A,B的B。
他们高的高,矮的矮。Tāmen gāo de gāo, ǎi de ǎi.

A and B must be actual contrasting words, not placeholders. Use specific adjective pairs that describe the situation.

Tips & Tricks

1

Think in contrasting pairs: 大/小, 高/低, 老/少, 好/坏, 长/短, 胖/瘦. These are your building blocks.

2

Follow the pattern with a conclusion — the pattern describes the disorder, then you state the result: 大的大,小的小,没有合适的。

3

This pattern can also use verbs: 来的来,走的走 (some coming, some going — disorganized).

4

Practice by observing real situations: look at a bookshelf (厚的厚,薄的薄), a parking lot (大的大,小的小), or a classroom (来的来,不来的不来).

Homework

Write four sentences using A的A,B的B to describe: (1) a collection of mismatched items (clothes, furniture, books), (2) a group of people with diverse characteristics, (3) uneven quality of something (exam results, food, work), and (4) a disorganized scene using verbs (来的来, 走的走).
