Use 在…上, 在…下, and 在…中 to express abstract or figurative location such as "regarding," "under the influence of," and "in the process of"
Place 在 before a noun or noun phrase, then add 上 (on / regarding), 下 (under / with the help of), or 中 (in / during / amid). These are abstract, not physical locations.
在…上 often means "regarding / on the matter of." 在…下 means "under the condition of / with the support of." 在…中 means "in the process of / among." These are figurative extensions of the literal location words.

Understanding 在……上/下/中
You already know 上, 下, and 中 as physical location words — on top of, below, and in the middle of. At HSK 4, you learn that they also work abstractly inside the 在…上/下/中 pattern. 在…上 means "regarding" or "in terms of" — for example, 在这件事情上 means "regarding this matter." 在…下 indicates a condition, influence, or assistance — 在他的帮助下 means "with his help" or "under his assistance." 在…中 suggests "during" or "amid" — 在学习中 means "in the process of studying." This pattern is extremely common in formal Chinese and reading passages. Mastering it will unlock a huge number of written Chinese sentences that might otherwise seem mysterious.

Common Mistakes
Influence, help, and guidance use 下 (under), not 上 (on). You are "under" someone's influence.
Do not add 的 between a verb and 中. Use 在学习中 directly. However, 的 is needed with possessive phrases: 在他的帮助下.

Quick rule of thumb: 上 = regarding a topic, 下 = under someone's help/influence, 中 = in the middle of a process.
When you see 在…下 with a person's help or guidance, it almost always implies gratitude — use it to thank people.
Practice distinguishing 在…上 from 在…方面 — they overlap in meaning but 在…上 is slightly more concise.
Look for this pattern in reading passages — it appears in almost every HSK 4+ text.
