Verb + (modifier//) + Object component

Separable verbs are compound words made of a verb and an object that normally appear together but must split apart when certain grammatical elements are inserted — such as 了, 过, duration phrases, or other modifiers.

The key insight is that these words look like single verbs but are actually verb-object (V-O) phrases internally. When you need to add 了, a frequency word, or a duration, the insertion goes between the verb part and the object part.

Understanding 动宾式离合词

Separable verbs (离合词, líhécí) are one of the trickiest aspects of Chinese grammar for learners. Words like 帮忙 (help), 见面 (meet), 结婚 (get married), and 睡觉 (sleep) look like single verbs, but they are actually verb-object compounds — 帮 is the verb and 忙 is the object, 见 is the verb and 面 is the object. This matters because when you need to insert grammatical elements like 了 (completed action), 过 (past experience), duration words, or frequency phrases, they must go between the two parts. You cannot say *帮忙了他; instead, you say 帮了他的忙. Similarly, you say 见过一次面, not *见面过一次. Mastering separable verbs requires retraining your instinct — treat each one as a tiny sentence (verb + object) rather than as a single word.

Key Points

  • 帮忙 (bāngmáng, help): 帮 + 忙 → 帮了他的忙 (helped him).
  • 见面 (jiànmiàn, meet): 见 + 面 → 见过一次面 (met once).
  • 结婚 (jiéhūn, get married): 结 + 婚 → 结了婚以后 (after getting married).
  • 睡觉 (shuìjiào, sleep): 睡 + 觉 → 睡了一个好觉 (had a good sleep).
  • 了 and 过 go between the verb and object: 点了头, 见过面.
  • When adding an object person, restructure: 帮我的忙 (help me), not *帮忙我.
  • Frequency/duration insertions: 见了两次面 (met twice), 放了三天假 (had three days off).
  • Common separable verbs at this level: 帮忙, 点头, 放假, 干杯, 见面, 结婚, 看病, 睡觉, 洗澡, 理发, 说话.

The phrase 干杯 (gānbēi, "cheers" / "bottoms up") is literally "dry the cup." At Chinese banquets and dinners, someone will raise their glass and say 干杯!or even 干一杯! In practice, you do not always have to finish the entire drink — a polite sip is usually fine, especially with wine or spirits.

Key Vocabulary

帮忙bāngmángto help; to do a favor
见面jiànmiànto meet (face to face)
结婚jiéhūnto get married
干杯gānbēito toast; cheers; bottoms up
理发lǐfàto get a haircut

Common Mistakes

我们见面了一次。
我们见了一次面。Wǒmen jiàn le yí cì miàn.

In separable verbs, 了 and frequency words go between the verb and object parts. Split 见面 into 见...面 and insert 了一次 in between.

她帮忙了我很多。
她帮了我很多忙。Tā bāng le wǒ hěn duō máng.

Split 帮忙 and place the person (我) and modifier (很多) between the verb and object.

他们结婚了三年了。
他们结婚三年了。/ 他们结了三年婚了。Tāmen jiéhūn sān nián le. / Tāmen jié le sān nián hūn le.

For duration with separable verbs, either keep the verb together with the duration after it, or split and insert the duration between verb and object.

Tips & Tricks

1

Whenever you learn a new two-character verb, check if it is separable. A good dictionary will mark V-O compounds.

2

The golden rule: if something needs to go inside the verb, the verb must split. Think of 见面 as "see-face" — you can "see a face once" but not "see-face once."

3

Practice with 了: take each separable verb and make a past tense sentence. This forces you to split the word.

4

A quick test: if you can say 帮什么忙? or 见什么面?, then the word is separable — the question word goes between the two parts.

Homework

Write one sentence for each of these separable verbs, using 了 or 过 to force the split: 帮忙, 见面, 结婚, 睡觉, 洗澡, 看病, 干杯. Then try adding a frequency word (一次, 两次) to three of them.
