Numeral-Measure Word Reduplication
数量重叠:数词 + 量词 + 数词 + 量词
Use the pattern "number + measure word + number + measure word" to express iteration and progression such as "one by one" or "day by day"
Repeat the same number-measure word combination to express "one by one," "row by row," "day after day," etc. When used before a verb, add 地 as the adverbial linker. When used as the subject, no 地 is needed.
The most common number used is 一 (one), producing patterns like 一个一个, 一天一天, 一遍一遍. Other numbers are possible: 两个两个 (two by two), 三个三个 (three at a time).

Understanding 数量重叠:数词 + 量词 + 数词 + 量词
The numeral-measure word reduplication pattern is a vivid and expressive way to convey repetition, progression, or methodical sequencing in Chinese. By repeating a number-measure word pair, you paint a picture of things happening systematically — one after another, row upon row, day by day. The most common version uses 一: 一个一个 (one by one), 一天一天 (day by day), 一遍一遍 (time after time). But you can also use other numbers: 两个两个地进来 (come in two by two). When this reduplicated phrase modifies a verb, you need the adverbial particle 地 between them. When the phrase acts as the subject of the sentence, 地 is not used. This pattern adds rhythm and emphasis to your speech — it conveys patience, persistence, or the steady passage of time.
Key Points
- Pattern: Num + MW + Num + MW. Example: 一个一个 (one by one), 一排一排 (row by row).
- When modifying a verb, add 地: 一个一个地走 (walk one by one).
- When used as subject, no 地: 日子一天一天过去了 (the days passed day by day).
- Most commonly used with 一, but other numbers work too: 两个两个 (two by two).
- This pattern emphasizes repetition, sequence, or gradual progression.
- Common measure words in this pattern: 个, 天, 遍, 排, 步, 件, 句.
This reduplication pattern is especially common in storytelling and literary Chinese. It creates a rhythmic, almost poetic quality. You will often hear parents use it affectionately: 妈妈一遍一遍地告诉你 (Mom tells you again and again). It conveys patience and emotional weight that a simple adverb like 反复 (repeatedly) does not capture.

The teacher had students enter the classroom two by two.
Non-一 number reduplication
妈妈一遍一遍地告诉我要注意安全。

日子一天一天过去了。
The days passed one by one.
Subject position — no 地 needed
他一步一步地走上了山顶。

孩子一口一口地吃着蛋糕。
The child ate the cake bite by bite.
Common Mistakes
When the reduplicated phrase modifies a verb, the adverbial particle 地 is needed between them.
When the reduplicated phrase is part of the subject-predicate flow (describing the subject itself progressing), 地 is typically omitted. Both forms are used, but omitting 地 is more natural here.
Practice Exercises
Tips & Tricks
This pattern is like English "one by one," "step by step" — but Chinese can do it with ANY measure word.
Remember the 地 rule: before a verb, add 地. Before a noun, use 的. As a subject, skip both.
Start with 一 + common measure words: 一个一个, 一天一天, 一步一步, 一遍一遍 — these are the most frequently used.
This pattern sounds literary and expressive — use it to add emotional weight to descriptions.
Homework
Write five sentences using numeral-measure word reduplication. Use at least three different measure words (个, 天, 遍, 排, 步, 口, 句, etc.) and include at least one example with a number other than 一.
