Measure Word Reduplication: AA Pattern
量词重叠:AA
Use reduplicated measure words to express "every" or "each" in Chinese
Repeat a measure word (AA pattern) to mean "every" or "each one." The reduplicated measure word functions as a subject or topic and is typically followed by 都 or 也 before the verb phrase.
This pattern is limited to single-syllable measure words. It creates a universal quantifier meaning — similar to "every single one" in English. The tone of the second syllable sometimes shifts to first tone in casual speech, but this is not required.

Understanding 量词重叠:AA
Measure word reduplication is one of the most elegant patterns in Chinese. Instead of saying 每一家 (every household), you can simply say 家家 — shorter, more rhythmic, and more literary. This AA pattern works with common measure words like 天天 (every day), 年年 (every year), 件件 (every item), 条条 (every strip/road), 次次 (every time), 回回 (every occasion), and 顿顿 (every meal). The resulting expression always means "each and every" and strongly implies completeness — no exceptions. You will encounter this pattern frequently in proverbs, news, and daily conversation.
Key Points
- 家家 (jiājiā) = every household. 家家都有本难念的经 is a famous saying meaning "every family has its own problems."
- 件件 (jiànjiàn) = every item/piece. 这些衣服件件都好看 = Every piece of clothing looks good.
- 条条 (tiáotiáo) = every strip/road. 条条大路通罗马 = All roads lead to Rome.
- 次次 (cìcì) = every time. 他考试次次都是第一名 = He comes first every single exam.
- 回回 (huíhuí) = every time (colloquial). Similar to 次次 but more casual.
- 顿顿 (dùndùn) = every meal. 他顿顿都吃米饭 = He eats rice at every meal.
- 天天 (tiāntiān) = every day. Already familiar from HSK 1, this is the same reduplication pattern.
- 年年 (niánnián) = every year. 年年有余 is a New Year blessing meaning "may there be abundance every year."
- The reduplicated measure word is usually followed by 都 (all) or 也 (also) to reinforce the universal meaning.
Reduplicated measure words appear heavily in Chinese four-character idioms (成语) and New Year blessings. 年年有余 (niánnián yǒu yú) — "abundance every year" — is one of the most common Spring Festival greetings, often paired with images of fish (鱼, which is a homophone of 余 "surplus").

Common Mistakes
When using the AA reduplication pattern, the noun after it is usually omitted because the measure word already implies it. If you want to include the noun, use 每 + MW + noun instead.
Do not add the noun 天 after the reduplicated 天天 — the meaning "every day" is already complete.
The AA pattern needs 都 to complete the "every single one" meaning. Without 都, the sentence feels incomplete.
Practice Exercises
Tips & Tricks
Think of measure word reduplication as a poetic shortcut for 每 + MW: 天天 = 每天, 年年 = 每年, 件件 = 每件.
Always pair the reduplicated measure word with 都 or 也 — this combination is what creates the "every single one, no exceptions" feeling.
This pattern is very common in proverbs and set phrases. Memorizing a few famous ones (条条大路通罗马, 家家有本难念的经) will help the pattern stick.
Only single-syllable measure words can be reduplicated this way. You cannot reduplicate 公斤 or 分钟.
Homework
Write eight sentences using different reduplicated measure words (天天, 年年, 件件, 条条, 次次, 回回, 顿顿, 个个). Each sentence should describe a habit, pattern, or universal truth. Try to include 都 in each sentence.
