Place the manner adverb before the verb phrase to describe the way an action is carried out. 互相 and 相互 indicate reciprocal actions (each other). 尽量 indicates best effort (as much as possible). 亲自 indicates personal involvement (in person/personally).

互相 and 相互 are near-synonyms — 互相 is more common in spoken Chinese, while 相互 is slightly more formal. 尽量 literally means "to the utmost extent" and softens requests. 亲自 emphasizes that someone important did something personally rather than delegating.

Listen to Jason & Amy explain the 方式副词:互相、尽量、亲自、相互 pattern

Understanding 方式副词:互相、尽量、亲自、相互

Manner adverbs tell us HOW an action is performed, and this group covers three important concepts. First, reciprocity: 互相 and 相互 both mean "each other" or "mutually" and are used when two or more parties perform an action toward each other — 互相帮助 means "help each other." Second, best effort: 尽量 means "try your best to" or "as much as possible" — it softens requests and shows willingness to try without promising absolute results. Third, personal involvement: 亲自 means "personally" or "in person" and emphasizes that someone took direct action rather than sending a representative or delegating. These adverbs add social and emotional nuance to your sentences.

Key Points

  • 互相 (hùxiāng) = each other, mutually. Requires a plural subject: 大家互相帮助 = Everyone helps each other.
  • 相互 (xiānghù) = mutually, each other. Slightly more formal than 互相: 相互尊重 = mutual respect.
  • 尽量 (jǐnliàng) = as much as possible, try one's best. Softens without guaranteeing: 我尽量来 = I'll try my best to come.
  • 亲自 (qīnzì) = personally, in person. Emphasizes direct involvement: 校长亲自来了 = The principal came personally.
  • 互相/相互 cannot be used with a singular subject doing something alone — the action must be bidirectional.
  • 尽量 is extremely useful in polite conversation — it shows effort without making a hard promise.
  • 亲自 often implies that the person is important or busy, making their personal involvement noteworthy.

The concept of 互相 (mutual/reciprocal) is deeply rooted in Chinese social values. The phrase 互相帮助 (help each other) appears in school mottos, workplace slogans, and community guidelines across China. Reciprocity is considered a fundamental building block of harmonious relationships (和谐关系).

Common Mistakes

我互相帮助他。
我们互相帮助。Wǒmen hùxiāng bāngzhù.

互相 requires a plural subject and a reciprocal action — "I mutually help him" does not work because the action is one-directional. Use 我们 (we) for a mutual action.

他尽量来了昨天。
他昨天尽量来了。/ 他尽量明天来。Tā zuótiān jǐnliàng lái le. / Tā jǐnliàng míngtiān lái.

尽量 is most natural with future actions or general principles. While it can describe past effort, the time word should come before 尽量, not after the verb.

我亲自地做了这个蛋糕。
我亲自做了这个蛋糕。Wǒ qīnzì zuò le zhège dàngāo.

亲自 is an adverb that directly modifies the verb — do not add 地 between them.

Tips & Tricks

1

互相 and 相互 are interchangeable in most contexts. Use 互相 in conversation and 相互 in writing or speeches for a more polished feel.

2

尽量 is the perfect word for polite promises: 我尽量来 (I'll try to come) avoids the awkwardness of committing to something you might not achieve.

3

亲自 carries weight because it implies the person could have delegated. 妈妈亲自做的饭 (Mom personally cooked) feels warmer than just 妈妈做的饭.

4

Practice: describe actions between friends using 互相, your goals using 尽量, and special efforts using 亲自.

Homework

Write about teamwork in your class or workplace. Use 互相 or 相互 at least three times to describe mutual actions (helping, learning, encouraging). Use 尽量 for effort-based goals and 亲自 for one special action someone took personally. Write at least eight sentences.
