The first action is marked with 了, and the second action follows immediately, often connected by 就. This pattern emphasizes that the second action happens right after or as a direct consequence of the first.

就 is optional but very common. Without 就, the sequence still implies immediacy. This pattern often describes habitual sequences or planned actions.

Listen to Jason & Amy explain the ……了……(就)…… pattern

Understanding ……了……(就)……

This pattern captures the idea of "as soon as A happens, then B follows." It is one of the most natural ways in Chinese to describe two actions happening in quick succession. The 了 after the first verb signals that the action is completed, and 就 before the second verb emphasizes the immediacy — "right away" or "immediately then." For example, 他下了课就去图书馆 means "As soon as class ends, he goes to the library." This pattern is incredibly versatile: it can describe habitual routines (他每天吃了晚饭就散步), one-time sequences (我到了北京就给你打电话), and even cause-and-effect reactions (他喝了酒就会脸红). The 就 can be omitted in more casual speech, but including it makes the tight connection between the two actions clearer and more emphatic.

Key Points

  • Verb₁ + 了 signals the completion of the first action.
  • 就 emphasizes immediacy — "right away / as soon as."
  • The subject is usually the same for both actions.
  • Can describe habits: 他下了班就回家。(He goes home right after work.)
  • Can describe reactions: 她听了这个消息就哭了。(She cried as soon as she heard the news.)
  • 就 is optional but adds emphasis on the immediate sequence.

Chinese people value efficiency and this pattern reflects that — describing streamlined action sequences. You will hear it constantly in daily life: 吃了饭就走 (eat and go right away) is a very common expression when someone is in a hurry.

Common Mistakes

他下课了就去了图书馆。
他下了课就去图书馆。Tā xià le kè jiù qù túshūguǎn.

In this pattern, 了 goes directly after the first verb (before the object), not after the verb-object compound. The second verb typically does not take 了.

他就下了课去图书馆。
他下了课就去图书馆。Tā xià le kè jiù qù túshūguǎn.

就 must come before the second verb, not before the first. The pattern is: V₁了 + (object) + 就 + V₂.
