Frequency Adverbs: 通常, 往往, 总, 总是
频率、重复副词:通常、往往、总、总是
Describe habitual actions and recurring patterns using frequency adverbs
Place the frequency adverb before the verb phrase to express how regularly or predictably an action occurs. These adverbs all describe recurring patterns but differ in nuance and formality.
通常 describes typical/usual behavior. 往往 describes tendencies with an implied causal link. 总 and 总是 both mean "always" — 总是 is slightly more emphatic and complete, while 总 can appear in more compact structures.

Understanding 频率、重复副词:通常、往往、总、总是
These four adverbs all deal with things that happen regularly, but each tells a slightly different story. 通常 (usually/normally) describes what is typical or standard — it is neutral and objective, like saying "normally, this is how things work." 往往 (often/tend to) describes tendencies and patterns, often with an implied reason — 为了记住汉字,他往往要写很多遍 suggests a cause-and-effect relationship. 总 and 总是 both mean "always" and can express either neutral habits or mild frustration. When someone says 他总是迟到, there is often an undertone of annoyance. Learning to distinguish these adverbs will make your Chinese sound more precise and natural.
Key Points
- 通常 (tōngcháng) = usually, normally. Objective and neutral: 他通常八点上班 = He usually starts work at 8.
- 往往 (wǎngwǎng) = often, tend to. Implies a pattern with a reason: 冬天往往很冷 = Winter tends to be cold.
- 总 (zǒng) = always. Can be neutral or mildly frustrated: 我总弄不明白 = I can never figure it out.
- 总是 (zǒngshì) = always. Slightly more emphatic: 他总是迟到 = He is always late (with a hint of annoyance).
- 通常 can start a sentence as a topic marker: 通常来说... = Generally speaking...
- 往往 describes tendencies based on patterns or experience — it cannot describe individual one-time events.
- 总 appears more naturally in negative patterns: 总弄不明白, 总忘记, 总做不好.
- 总是 works well with both positive and negative patterns: 总是很开心, 总是迟到.
Chinese speakers often use 往往 when sharing life wisdom or general observations: 便宜的东西往往质量不好 (Cheap things tend to be low quality). This makes the observation sound like accumulated experience rather than a personal judgment.

Common Mistakes
往往 describes general tendencies and patterns, not one-time specific events. You cannot use it with a specific date like 昨天.
通常 describes what is typical or usual — it does not pair well with specific future plans. Use it for habitual patterns.
While not strictly wrong, in negative patterns (verb + 不 + complement), 总 alone sounds more natural than the fuller 总是.
Practice Exercises
Tips & Tricks
通常 is your safe, neutral choice for "usually" — it works in both formal and informal contexts and never carries emotional weight.
往往 is great for sharing wisdom and observations. It implies "in my experience, this tends to happen because..." — use it to sound insightful.
总 in negative patterns (总弄不明白, 总忘记) expresses ongoing frustration — a feeling of "I keep failing at this."
If you are unsure between 总 and 总是, use 总是 — it is always correct and slightly more emphatic.
Homework
Write about your study habits using all four adverbs. Describe what you usually do (通常), what tends to happen as a pattern (往往), what you always do (总是), and what you can never seem to get right (总 + negative). Write at least eight sentences.
