A B + V + + Adj / A B + Adj / A + V + + + B + Adj / A B + /// + V +

Four patterns that expand the basic 比 comparison: (1) comparing how actions are performed, (2) negating comparisons, (3) placing 比 after the complement marker 得, and (4) using 多/少/早/晚 with specific quantities.

These patterns build on the basic A 比 B + adjective structure. They allow for more nuanced and precise comparisons involving actions, degrees, and specific numerical differences.

Understanding 比较句4

At HSK 2, you learned basic comparisons like 他比我高 (He is taller than me). Now we expand to four more sophisticated patterns. Pattern 1 compares how people perform actions: 我比他跑得快 (I run faster than him). Pattern 2 uses 不比 for negation, which means "not necessarily more...than" rather than "less than": 我姐姐不比我高 means my sister is not necessarily taller, not that she is shorter. Pattern 3 rearranges the word order, placing 比 inside the complement: 我跑得比他快 (I run faster than him). Pattern 4 adds specific quantities: 我比他多吃了五个饺子 (I ate five more dumplings than him). Together these patterns give you a complete toolkit for making detailed, precise comparisons in Chinese.

Key Points

  • Pattern 1: A 比 B + V + 得 + Adj — 我比他跑得快 (I run faster than he does).
  • Pattern 2: A 不比 B + Adj — 我姐姐不比我高 (My sister is not taller than me / about the same).
  • Pattern 3: A + V + 得 + 比 + B + Adj — 我跑得比他快 (same meaning as Pattern 1, different word order).
  • Pattern 4: A 比 B + 多/少/早/晚 + V + 数量 — 我比他多吃了五个饺子.
  • 不比 ≠ 没有...那么. 不比 means "not necessarily more"; 没有 means "not as much as."
  • In Pattern 4, the quantity word (多/少/早/晚) comes before the verb.
  • Patterns 1 and 3 are interchangeable in meaning — use whichever feels more natural.
  • Pattern 4 is essential for expressing exact differences in amount, time, or frequency.

Chinese people often use 不比 to politely disagree with comparisons. If someone says 你比我聪明 (You are smarter than me), you might respond 我不比你聪明 to humbly deflect. This softening technique is deeply embedded in Chinese social etiquette.

Pattern 4: time difference

Common Mistakes

我比他跑快得。
我比他跑得快。Wǒ bǐ tā pǎo de kuài.

得 comes right after the verb and before the adjective. It is a complement marker, not a sentence-final particle.

我比他吃了多五个饺子。
我比他多吃了五个饺子。Wǒ bǐ tā duō chī le wǔ ge jiǎozi.

In Pattern 4, the quantity word (多/少/早/晚) comes before the verb, not after it.

他不比我高 means 他比我矮。
他不比我高 means they are about the same height.

不比 means "not necessarily more than," implying they are roughly equal. It does not mean the opposite.

translate

She sings better than me.

Tips & Tricks

1

Patterns 1 and 3 mean the same thing — choose based on what you want to emphasize.

2

Remember: 不比 ≠ opposite. 不比我高 means "not taller" (about equal), not "shorter."

3

For Pattern 4, think "more/fewer/earlier/later + verb + amount": 多吃了五个, 早到了十分钟.

4

Practice comparing yourself with friends and family: who runs faster, eats more, sleeps later.

Homework

Write sixteen comparison sentences: four for each pattern. Compare yourself with classmates, family members, or famous people. Be specific with quantities in Pattern 4.
