+ purpose/person + verb / + purpose + verb

Place 为 or 为了 before the reason, purpose, or beneficiary. 为 is shorter and often used in set phrases; 为了 is the full form used in longer sentences to clearly mark purpose.

为 is pronounced wèi (fourth tone) as a preposition meaning "for." Do not confuse it with 为 (wéi, second tone) meaning "to be" or "to act as." 为了 is the expanded form and is more common in spoken Chinese.

Listen to Jason & Amy explain the 介词:为 pattern

Understanding 介词:为

Why do we do things? 为 answers that question. It means "for (the sake of)" or "because of." When you raise a glass and say 为大家的健康干杯 you are toasting FOR everyone's health. When you say 我们都为你的好成绩高兴 you are saying we are all happy BECAUSE OF your good grades. 为 connects actions to their purposes. The expanded form 为了 is even more common: 为了学好中文,我每天练习两个小时 (In order to learn Chinese well, I practice two hours every day). The difference between 为 and 为了 is mostly about sentence length — 为 appears in short, punchy phrases (为你, 为大家), while 为了 introduces longer purpose clauses. Both are essential for explaining motivations and reasons.

Key Points

  • 为 (wèi) = "for / because of / for the sake of" — expresses purpose or cause.
  • 为了 (wèile) = "in order to / for the purpose of" — introduces a purpose clause.
  • 为 + person: 为你高兴 (happy for you), 为大家服务 (serve everyone).
  • 为 + abstract goal: 为健康 (for health), 为和平 (for peace).
  • 为了 + purpose + main clause: 为了省钱,他骑车上班 (To save money, he bikes to work).
  • 为什么 (wèi shénme) = "why" — literally "for what reason."
  • 为 vs. 给: 为 emphasizes purpose/reason; 给 emphasizes the recipient of an action.

The phrase 为人民服务 (Serve the people) is one of the most famous political slogans in China, originating from Mao Zedong. You will see it on buildings and in public spaces. It perfectly illustrates the "for the sake of" meaning of 为.

When introducing a purpose clause with a verb, use 为了 (not just 为). 为 alone works best with nouns or short phrases.

我为了你很高兴。
我为你很高兴。Wǒ wèi nǐ hěn gāoxìng.

When 为 is followed by a simple noun or pronoun (not a clause), use 为 without 了: 为你高兴, not 为了你高兴.
