Chinese phrases fall into five structural types: 联合 (coordinating — equal elements joined), 偏正 (modifier + head), 动宾 (verb + object), 动补 (verb + complement), and 主谓 (subject + predicate).

Understanding these structures helps you see the building blocks of Chinese sentences. Every phrase you encounter fits into one of these five patterns.

Understanding 基本结构类型

Think of these five phrase structures as the DNA of Chinese. Every sentence is built from these building blocks. 联合 (coordinating) joins equal elements — like 老师和学生 (teachers and students) or 又大又好 (both big and good). 偏正 (modifier-head) puts a modifier before the main word — like 很好 (very good) or 新书 (new book). 动宾 (verb-object) is the classic action + target — like 吃饭 (eat food) or 看书 (read books). 动补 (verb-complement) adds result or degree info after the verb — like 看完 (finish reading) or 跑得快 (run fast). 主谓 (subject-predicate) is a mini-sentence inside a phrase — like 我高兴 (I am happy) or 天气好 (the weather is good). Recognizing these patterns will transform how you understand Chinese — you will start seeing structure everywhere.

Key Points

  • 联合 (liánhé) = Coordinating: equal elements joined. 老师和学生, 大大小小, 又快又好.
  • 偏正 (piānzhèng) = Modifier-Head: modifier + main word. 新书, 很好, 认真地.
  • 动宾 (dòngbīn) = Verb-Object: verb + its object. 吃饭, 看电影, 写作业.
  • 动补 (dòngbǔ) = Verb-Complement: verb + complement. 看完, 听懂, 跑得快.
  • 主谓 (zhǔwèi) = Subject-Predicate: topic + comment. 我高兴, 头疼, 天气好.
  • One sentence can contain multiple phrase types nested together.
  • These five types cover all possible phrase structures in standard Chinese.
  • Recognizing the type helps you understand where to place modifiers, objects, and complements.

Chinese grammar education emphasizes these structural categories from elementary school. Understanding them gives you the same framework that native speakers learn, helping you think about Chinese the way Chinese people do rather than always translating from English.

看完了书 classified as 动宾
看完 is 动补, 看书 is 动宾kàn wán / kàn shū

看完 (finish watching) is verb + complement (动补). 看书 (read a book) is verb + object (动宾). The same verb can form different phrase types depending on what follows.

Calling 很好 a 联合 phrase.
很好 is a 偏正 phrase (modifier + head).hěn hǎo

很 modifies 好 — it is not two equal elements. 联合 requires equal elements like 大和小. 很好 is 偏正 because 很 describes the degree of 好.

Tips & Tricks

1

When you learn a new phrase, ask yourself: which of the five types is this? It will deepen your understanding.

2

Most two-character Chinese words follow these patterns: 学习 (联合), 好看 (偏正), 吃饭 (动宾), 看见 (动补), 地震 (主谓).

3

Verb-object (动宾) is the most common phrase type in daily Chinese: 吃饭, 喝水, 看书, 写字.

4

Modifier-head (偏正) is essential for description: 很大, 非常好, 特别漂亮, 新的衣服.
