Elliptical Questions with 呢
用"呢"构成的省略式疑问句
Form short follow-up questions using just a noun or pronoun plus 呢
After a statement or question has established context, you can ask a follow-up question by simply saying a noun or pronoun plus 呢. The meaning depends entirely on context — usually "what about...?" or "where is...?"
This pattern only works when context is clear. Without prior context, 他呢?could mean anything. With context (你去不去?我去。他呢?), it clearly means "What about him? Is he going?"

Understanding 用"呢"构成的省略式疑问句
This is one of the most elegant patterns in Chinese — and one of the shortest. Instead of repeating a full question, you simply say a noun or pronoun plus 呢 and the listener fills in the rest from context. If someone says 我去医院 and you respond with 你呢?, it means "What about you? Where are you going?" If you see books on the table and say 笔呢?, it means "Where are the pens?" The beauty of this pattern is its efficiency — with just two syllables, you can ask a complete question. It is the Chinese equivalent of "And you?" or "What about...?" The particle 呢 at the end signals that you are asking something, and the context tells the listener exactly what you are asking about.
Key Points
- Pronoun + 呢: 我去商店,你呢?(I am going to the store, what about you?)
- Noun + 呢: 书在桌子上,笔呢?(The books are on the table, where are the pens?)
- The meaning depends on context — it could mean "what about," "where is," or "how about."
- This pattern is a follow-up — it needs prior context to make sense.
- It is extremely common in daily conversation and makes you sound natural.
- 呢 here is different from the 呢 in "正在……呢" (ongoing action).
- You can chain multiple 呢 questions: 他呢?她呢?他们呢?
Chinese conversation thrives on brevity and shared context. Using 呢 questions shows you are engaged in the conversation and following along. It is much more natural than repeating the full question each time.

Practice Exercises
Tips & Tricks
This is one of the most common patterns in spoken Chinese — you will hear 你呢 dozens of times a day.
Use it to keep conversations flowing: after someone answers a question, follow up with 你呢?
It works with any noun: names, objects, places, times — as long as context is clear.
Practice in pairs: one person makes a statement, the other asks a 呢 question about something else.
Homework
